Acute Illness

At some point in our lives, we will all experience a health problem, whether it's the common cold or the pesky flu. While some will go away on their own, there are health issues that require urgent medical attention, and it's important to know when to seek proper treatment.

What Is an Acute Illness?

Acute illnesses develop suddenly (usually over a period of hours to days) and tend to last for a short period of time (usually days to weeks). Some acute illnesses however may lead to more serious and long-lasting complications if not treated.

Acute diseases can include these common symptoms:

  • Fever
  • Sore throat
  • Cough
  • Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing
  • Ear pain
  • Runny nose
  • Diarrhea
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Rash
  • Headache
  • Sudden onset chest pain

The information you give your doctor about symptoms you’re experiencing, in combination with physical checks done will help him or her to arrive at an accurate diagnosis.

Serious Acute Illnesses

Many acute illnesses can be mild and may go away on their own, or can be treated with a simple course of antibiotics or other prescription medications. There are some acute diseases, however, that if not treated immediately, may result in severe disability and death. These include:

  • Heart attack
  • Asthma attack
  • Pneumonia
  • Appendicitis
  • Organ failure
  • Acute bronchitis
  • Stroke

Seek medical attention immediately if you or a loved one start having difficulty breathing, sudden onset chest pain, sudden loss of responsiveness/consciousness or weakness or swelling in any of the limbs.

If you suspect you may have a severe acute illness, it's important that you call 911 or go to your local emergency room.
